Zion Baptist was organized on May 16 1934, by the late Pastor Matthew Walter Wilkerson. The first church building, a vacant theater, was located at Eager and Bond Street. On January 22, 1956, Zion Members marched gallantly into their new and beautiful semi-Gothic structure, located at Caroline and Lanvale Streets – which is its current location. On September 27, 1957, Pastor Robert Moses Williams was elected as pastor of Zion Baptist Church. In 1983, Richard E. Tabron and Ocam J. Gray Jr. along with Timothy Loftin became associate ministers of Zion. Richard Tabron was elected as Zion’s Interim Pastor on February 12, 1984.
In September 1985, Marshall F. Prentice joined the Zion Family as its Pastor, and is still currently at the helm. Pastor Prentice, a true man of God, has worked diligently for the betterment of Zion. As mandated by God, Pastor Prentice’s goal is to ensure that your soul is renewed, your spirit revitalized, and filled with God’s word. Under his leadership, Zion continues to grow and its many ministries extend beyond the brick & mortar walls, to reach out and touch countless lives in the community.
